Aperio has been awarded another patent on line scanning in virtual microscopy; U.S. Patent No. 6,917,696, entitled "Fully Automatic Rapid Microscope Slide Scanner." Quoting from the press release:
"Aperio pioneered the use of line scanning in virtual microscopy, setting new standards for scanning performance and image quality. Our technology leadership has contributed significantly to the development of the soon-to-be $1B digital pathology market," said Dirk Soenksen, Aperio's chief executive officer. "This patent strengthens Aperio's already formidable patent position in virtual microscopy, a position that comprises some 20 issued, licensed or pending patents covering digital slide capture, compression, viewing, management and entire-slide analysis. Our patent portfolio also includes licenses to the rich virtual microscopy patents of Bacus Laboratories, a suite of patents we believe are essential for anyone wishing to do business in the field of virtual microscopy."
