Wired: Paul Allen Institute for brain science

Wired Magazine recently ran an interesting article on the Paul Allen Institute for brain science; you may know, they are one of Aperio's biggest and most technologically progressive customers.

The story doesn't mention Aperio, but PAI are [now] a big customer, using our systems to address a key need:

The next challenge was finding a way to digitally photograph every slide. Given the output of the lab, it was obvious that robotic microscopes would be required. Unfortunately, no such technology existed, which meant that the institute had to build its own. The researchers rigged 10 Leica 600B microscopes with glass-slide loaders, barcode readers, and small computers running image-analysis software."

The italics are mine; such technology does now exist (!)

The work the institute are doing is amazing and valuable, and one aspect of their work which is not emphasized in the piece is their philanthropy; the work product of the institute is being placed in the public domain for the good of all.

Wal-Mart targets smaller practices with low-cost EHR offering

So, this almost feels like an April Fools story, but not quite: Wal-Mart targets smaller practices with low-cost EHR offering.

Wal-Mart plans to shake-up the U.S. healthcare sector by selling less expensive electronic health records (EHRs) to physicians working in small practices.

The retailer will not offer EHRs in its stores but, starting this spring, will target physicians' practices with bundled hardware, software, installation, maintenance and training.

Wal-Mart says it will offer the health IT package to doctors for approximately $25,000 - about half the price of technology now on the market. The move comes hard on the heels of the $19 billion Congress approved in the stimulus bill to help doctors move to EHRs.

The company will specifically target small physician offices. In the U.S., just 17 percent of small physician offices are currently estimated to be using EHRs.

Through its Sam's Club division, Wal-Mart will become a systems integrator, bundling hardware from partner Dell with software as a service from Massachusetts-based eClinicalWorks.

Interesting...  definitely a Clayton Christensen -like "attack from below".  I wonder if they'll be a good partner for Aperio's SecondSlide service?  They will need a way to incorporate digital pathology...
