The Cell Counting Cryptogram Challenge

Genetic Engineering and Biotech News has posted an interesting challenge on their website; the contest is based on Cell Counting.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to "decode the cipher hidden in this image".  In case you get stuck, they are going to post weekly clues...  quite interesting, and good luck!
